I do not know many sports that are held in a pub let alone the World Championships of that sport being held in a pub, but this is just what happens with the World Marbles Championship.

In 2006 the British and World Marbles Championship took place in Tinsley Green, London in a pub.
We wonder when the game of Marbles was invented as one source says the game of Marbles was invented in 1588 when two young men from the county played a game with round small glass objects (Marbles) for the hand of a young lady.

Then another source says “The game of marbles is more than 4000 years old. The Egyptians, and later the Romans, played with marbles made from clay and stone”

So other than the World Marbles Championship having the weirdest place for its host (a pub), just when was the game of marbles invented?
